HThe new mx season has officially started. Yesterday the first AMA supercross of 2011 was held in Anaheim. All eyes were on Stewart, Reed and Dungey but the name Villopoto only appeared sporadically in the predictions, as evidenced by our MXMag Poll. After a serious injury last season, this Kawasaki rider was super motivated to fight back hard, which he did in the Angel Stadium.
Tedesco took the best start but after four laps had to watch as Villopoto took the lead and immediately tried to open a gap. Dungey started fourth, Stewart 9th and Reed came through after a few turns in 12th. Villopoto opened a gap at the front and was never threatened again. Dungey moved up to second place where he caught Stewart halfway. Stewart was unable to pass Dungey and finished third. Trey Canard finished fourth and Chad Reed was only able to get into fifth place in the final stages.
The Lites were mainly looking forward to Ken Roczen. After the media hype that the German has received in recent weeks, all eyes were on him. He immediately lived up to expectations by setting the fastest time in the first training session. However, things went wrong in the second practice when he was hit by another rider and limped off the track with obvious leg pain.
The Lites final ended up being a PC Kawasaki party, with Josh Hansen emerging victorious. Hansen was flanked on the podium by his teammates Broc Tickle and Tyla Rattray, who immediately climbed onto the podium on his SX debut. Roczen, for his part, had a bad start in the final. However, he got into the rhythm little by little and eventually finished seventh in his first SX race.
