WWhat promised to be an exciting finale to the AMA SX Championship turned from a super race into a real anticlimax yesterday. In a straight duel between Ryan Dungey and Ryan Villopoto, Villopoto crashed and had to retire, giving free rein to Dungey who now has a 37p lead.
After Nick Wey's holeshot, it was Ryan Dungey who quickly worked his way into the lead. Villopoto moved along and for 10 laps he was less than a second behind Dungey at the rear wheel. When they started with doubled riders, Villopoto went on the attack and made a risky block pass, sending them both to the ground. The roles were now reversed, the Kawasaki rider jumped up first and took off with Dungey on his wheel. And then in a split second, Villopoto lost control on a triple, landing feet first after the jump and lying motionless for several minutes. Ultimately, he was taken away on a stretcher and there are fears of a lower leg fracture. The way was therefore open for Dungey who won the match and thus increased his lead to 37p. Kevin Windham was second again and Andrew Short was third.
There was no Christophe Pourcel in the top 10 among the Lites. The brand new champion crashed in the second corner, did not get away immediately and gave up a few laps later. Justin Barcia won his second match of the season ahead of Dean Wilson and Brett Metcalfe. Next week in Seattle it will be the turn of the West Lites again, where Jake Weimer and Trey Canard will compete for two more games.
